Background & Aim: There is no formal training program for training of stoma care nurses exists in Pakistan. The aim of the
study was to identify the training needs of non-specialist stoma care nurses in a specialist cancer hospital in Lahore, Pakistan.
Methods: A descriptive qualitative design was used to conduct this study. The study was approved by scientific committee
of SKMCH & RC and Institution Review Board. A purposive sample of 8 nurses and 4 surgeons was selected from the study
setting. Data was collected through semi structured interviews. The interviews were tape recorded, translated into English and
transcribed. Data was analyzed using licensed version of NVIVO 11 Pro. The software assisted in thematic analysis. Themes
and subthemes were identified.
Findings: The main themes identified were: (1) Functions of stoma care nurses; (2) Training and education of nurses; (3)
Patients problems expressed by health care workers; and (4) Training needs of stoma care nurses. The major theme i.e. training
needs were subdivided into eighteen subthemes.
Conclusion: The study concluded that there are some very important aspects of stoma care which are either missing or not
performed properly. The aim of the study was fulfilled by identification of training needs of stoma care nurses.
