Technology is becoming increasingly entrenched in our daily life. But as
always, Every advancement has a negative facet. Materiality is the primary
issue one reflects on when creating in the 3D living space. Certain principles
such as environmental concern, machine regulations, typical standards,
stability, time aspect and aesthetical approach play a fundamental role in this
spatial activation process. From my perspective as a visitor at the Trienale
2016, the appearance of plastic and non-reusable materials/chemicals (ex.
resin) highlighted to a great extent the element of mass-production and
evoked the inferred impacts this has on the environment.
The Growing Lab- Mycelia, 2013
Bio-Technology is in the scope of both of the projects that I selected as
case studies, when experimenting with my own design proposal for my
final year at university. My goal was to combine futuristic architecture with
environmental considerations and the possibilities of hybrid spaces to offer
diversity in peopleâ??s daily lives. My vision entailed a setting where people
can benefit from the time-efficiency of fast production while at the same
time maintaining a respectful attitude towards the natural environment. This
would be realised by creating a “monastery” type of community and the use
of recyclable materials.
The choice of a “monastery”typology is justified by my view that social
behavior and architecture are deeply interconnected. Architecture has the
potential to solve issues of isolation, as well as social discrimination against
alternative or more eccentric personalities, individuals that may be judged
or rejected when compared to what is considered an â??averageâ?? or â??normalâ??
lifestyle . By combining those kind of observations, the â??â??Cult of Sensualityâ??â??
was developed
