Umbilical sinus, a rare malformation of the umbilicus: Case report

Abstract :

The vitelline duct malformations are rare and seen in only 2% of the cases. Out of all vitelline duct malformations, meckels diverticulum is the most common while umbilical sinus is the rarest. Umbilical sinus presents as persistent umbilical discharge in younger children. Appropriate clinical history and examination along with histopathological interpretation aids in the diagnosis. We present a case of 15 years old male who presented with persistent sinus at the umbilical region since birth with off and on mucopurulent discharge. The patient was otherwise healthy. An excision biopsy was done .Histopathological examination revealed surface stratified squamous epithelium and underlying tract lined by large bowel mucosa with mild chronic inflammatory cell infiltrate in the lamina propria. Muscle tissue was also identified. Features were consistent with umbilical sinus. Umbilical sinus although rare, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any persisting umbilical discharge. Surgical excision and repair of the malformation is the usual mode of treatment.

Anam Khan did her M.B.,B.S. from University Of Health Sciences in 2012 at the age of 24. Now she is doing her post graduate residency from Chughtai Lab. in Histopathology.
