Abstract :

Tzu Chi Hospital is the only medical center in eastern of Taiwan; we must treat the most critical patients. If there were any care missing may cause serious consequences. An effective training for ICU nurse is an important issue. This study explored the effectiveness of using simulation training to improve the patient safety in Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The study used onegroup pretest-posttest design; study period was December 2014 to September 2015. We designed a simulation scenario about a critical patient in ICU; participants had to care the patient about 10 minutes. There were three instructors took Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) to score, then gave 5 minutes teaching directly. Participants tested again six months later. Satisfactory questionnaire would be completed after the test. Simulation training focused on medical equipment safety, high alert drugs and effective restraints. At medical equipment safety, the post-test scores than the pre-test score increased by 7%. High alert drugs and restraints scores increased 17.5% and 19.5%, respectively, which reached a significant difference (p<0.05). Satisfaction surveys used Likertā??s scale with an average score of 4.04. Using simulated scenarios for test teaching, we can observe the real response of nursing staffs, teaching for individual needs, leaving a deep impression. The results of the test scores before and after the test significantly increased, not only inspired the study team, but also promote the simulation training. In the future; we will continue to plan training methods to achieve patient safety.
