One of the most rapidly evolving areas in the field of seizures and epilepsy is that of electroencephalography (EEG). From routine ambulatory EEGs to now continuous long-term trend EEGs performed in intensive care units as well as video EEG monitoring have become essential tools for those who want to diagnose seizures and/or seizure emergencies. Given the increasing number of individuals who present with seizures and/or its mimickers it is essential to make an appropriate diagnosis so that therapy can be initiated in a timely manner in order to restore quality of life for those who are impacted. This particular workshop will examine two important areas of seizure and epilepsy diagnosis. The first area is the use of critical care EEG monitoring in intensive care units and hospital based locations. The best evidence for the appropriate utilization of these services as well as highlighting through a highly interactive case format approach will illustrate the utility of these services and when these services are not especially helpful. Secondly, video EEG monitoring is the hallmark for diagnosis of seizures and epilepsy. Through case-based format videos of varying presentations of seizures that run the spectrum from children to older adults will be presented in order to also highlight how these studies are useful for diagnosis and their appropriate utilization.
