The study of infinitesimal conditions related to varying a solution P of a problem to slightly different solutions Pε, where ε is a small number, or vector of small quantities is deformation theory. Problems related to deformation theory appear in various areas of mathematics, in particular in algebra, algebraic and analytic geometry, and mathematical physics
