Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure used to treat baldness or hair loss. Typically, tiny patches of scalp are removed from the backand sides of the head and implanted in the bald spots in the front and top of the head.
The first hair transplant surgery was performed by Dr. Norman Orentreich in the year of 1952 in New York City. He coined the term “donor dominance” to explain the basic principle of hair transplantation which says that transplanted hair continues to display the same characteristics of the hair from where it was taken. In other words, healthy hair that is harvested from the back or sides of the scalp that is transplanted to the balding area on the top of the head will continue to grow as if it were still in its original location. In recent techniques scientists makes pluripotent stem cells to differentiate into dermal papilla cells, which will induce hair growth.
