Pap smear is a cytological technique employed in detecting the cervical cancer, where the cervical cells are scraped off by the doctor and examined under the microscope for pre-cancerous and cancerous cells.
Abnormal findings are often followed up by more sensitive diagnostic procedures, and, if warranted, interventions that aim to prevent progression to cervical cancer.
