Renal replacement therapy has a vital role in the treatment of severe acute kidney injury and end-stage renal disease. Renal replacement therapy replaces non-endocrine kidney function in patients with renal failure and is occasionally used for some forms of poisoning.
Techniques include intermittent haemodialysis, continuous hemofiltration and haemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis. All modalities exchange solute and remove fluid from the blood, using dialysis and filtration across permeable membranes.
