semiconductor laser are very small in size and appearance. It is similar to a transistor and has the operation like LED but the output beam has the characteristics of laser light. It is also called Injection Laser. Most semiconductor lasers are laser diodes, which are pumped with an electrical current in a region where an n-doped and a p-doped semiconductor material meet. The physical origin of gain in a semiconductor is illustrated Without pumping, most of the electrons are in the valence band.
